If you dread public speaking of any form (from presentations to a TEDx), read this 👇 Fear is normal. It’s a part of the human psyche. It wants to keep you safe from danger. “But Cecile, what is the danger with public speaking? What does fear want to protect me from?” 🤔

I often get asked that question. Let me be loud and clear:

Fear comes as a reaction to 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆. It’s human because it’s engrained into our DNA since the very early days of humankind on this planet. Back then, humans faced a lot of physical dangers (animals, the weather, food, to name a few). In the context of public speaking, 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮 (that’s what scientists call it when you dread public speaking of any form or kind) comes from the 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆. What if I fail? That’s the 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲 doing the talking. What if I don’t have what it takes to make a presentation or talk in front of a large (or even smaller) audience? That’s the 𝗳𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗰𝘆. And all this fear is fueled by our innate 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗺 & the contemporary standards of our society (be perfect, or else you have no worth). How can you face your fears if you don’t know where they come from? Now you know. 😉 So, let me respond to your fears: 💞 Yes, mistakes & failures are part of the game. See them as an opportunity to learn & improve. 💞 Yes, you have what it takes. Public speaking is not a natural talent, it can be cultivated. Nor has it anything to do with your personality traits (e.g. shy/reserved, introverted, etc.) 💞 Come to terms with your fear, & mindfully work on your perfectionism that is severely harming you & your confidence. That’s my two cents on the matter.
